Welcome to US Mirror Sailing - Dedicated to furthering the International Mirror Dinghy in the USA.
The Mirror dinghy is a classic family boat that is equally at home being sailed, rowed, raced, cruised, fished, camped in... you name it, it's probably been done.
First designed in the 1960's by DIY pioneer Barry Bucknell and legendary boat designer Jack Holt, the class achieved phenomenal growth in the UK and overseas with the result that sail numbers are now 70,000+. Boats can still be bought as plywood 'stitch and glue' kits for home construction and in certain countries you can buy GRP versions that conform to the exact same one-design rules and principles and can be raced side by side with the wooden boats.
Traditionally the Mirror sports a Gunter rig (with a gaff), optional spinnaker and transom sheeting. However, recent developments mean that a bermudan rig and centre main are now legal options too. The traditional rig still holds it's own in competitive events though, and wooden boats continue to prove they are an equal match to their GRP brethren.
While much of the Mirror 'scene' outside of the USA concentrates on racing, the Mirror's seaworthiness and cruising exploits have become almost legendary. Even if you're not planning an extended coastal passage, the Mirrors rugged design and construction makes it the ideal boat for families to explore lakes, rivers, creeks and harbours.
Kits are available in North America from MSD. Please see our Useful Links section for details.
